HMS Conquest was a light cruiser and part of the 5th Light Cruiser Squadron of the Harwich Force which patrolled the North Sea, guarding the English Channel and the Straits of Dover. On 28th March, 1916, when she was anchored off Harwich, 39 members of her crew were returning to the ship after shore leave on one of the ship’s boats. The weather was bad, a snow storm started and the boat got lost, foundered and sunk. All 39 of those aboard drowned including Alfred Benmore. |
